Post GBJAM7 Improvements


Orbital Wars was developed by @pencilwing and I in our spare time and even though we were super happy with what we achieve for GBJAM7 competition, we weren't able to do in time a lot of stuff we wanted to.

After publishing the game and receiving great feedback about it, both in the GBJAM7 discord channel and the competition comments section, we decided to spend some time improving it. 

One of main weaknesses was the lack of Music & SFX and that's why @gamecomposer87 offered himself to do it, and we accepted. Thank you very much for helping us.

This is a list of some of the features of the new version:

  • Music & Sound Effects
  • Path finding for movement (you can't jump over empty spaces and you can block units with other units)
  • Palette swapping (because... why not?)
  • Can't move selector outside the world
  • More units animations for attack sequences and hit effects
  • Lots of UI/UX improvements:
    • Different colors for each player units and for neutral units
    • Better movement/attack areas indicators
    • Controls for selecting unused units
    • Speed up game sequences with B button
    • Can hold arrow keys to move units selector
    • Hit effects over structures when damaging them
    • Show unit real damage (based on its health)
    • Can select your units all the time now, even when waiting for another unit's action.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Victory player is the right one now.
    • All units can capture structures now by attacking them


The game was developed completely open source, just in case you are interested in the behind the scenes.

Apart from this update, we wanted to share a list of completely out of scope features we thought about during development:

  • CPU Player (AI) + Custom objective maps
  • Critical Hits
  • Ranged and Melee attacks
  • Armors
  • Android version (with GB skin for buttons)
  • Barriers to block attacks (mountains for example)
  • Show the lifebar during the attack sequence 
  • More maps
  • More tilesets
  • More units
  • Different heroes with their portraits
